When The Foot Hits The Ground, Ouch! Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Spurs
Joe Grant, PT, ATC, EdM
Do you have foot pain that is worse first thing in the morning or after being off your feet for a long time? You could have a condition called plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a broad band of ligament in the base of the foot. Its' role is to support the arch of the foot and help control movement during weight-bearing activities such as walking, running or jumping. Plantar fasciitis often occurs in conjunction with bone spurs in the heel. In most cases, plantar fasciitis and bone spurs are the result of overuse when the fascia becomes overstretched due to weakness in the ankle and the hip. Physical therapy is often the treatment of choice for this condition. A full evaluation from hip to foot is performed to determine which joints are stiff and which muscles are weak. Your physical therapist will then work with you to restore joint motion and create a personalized exercise program to restore muscle strength. In acute cases, anti-inflammatory modalities such as ultrasound or iontophoresis may be used. Footwear is evaluation to assure proper support needed for your activity level. Occasionally, arch support inserts are necessary. If your foot is "in pain", consult your physician to see if a physical therapy evaluation is appropriate for you. With the right treatment you'll soon be "back to action".
