Sciatica can be a Pain in the Butt

Back To Action

In fact, sciatica IS a pain in the butt. The term 'sciatica' is a general diagnosis. It is also a description of a pattern of pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve is not actually one nerve, but rather a bundle of nerves that originates at the lower lumbar vertebrae and sacrum.  These nerves join together and form a larger nerve bundle that runs down the buttocks, under some small muscles and splits off into smaller branches innervating lower leg muscles.

Any problems along the path of the nerve can cause either localized pain or pain that is referred to other areas along the nerve pathway.  For instance, one of the muscles that comes in contact with the sciatic nerve is the piriformis muscle. This muscle is located deep within the buttocks region.  If this muscle is in spasm, it can constrict the sciatic nerve and cause pain and tingling. Sciatic pain can also be discogenic; meaning it can occur if a disc presses on a nerve root at the spinal level.

Physical therapist are trained to distinguish origins of sciatic pain and treat the appropriate area to help relieve pain and increase function.  If you're having sciatic pain, give us a call and let one of our therapists help you get back on your feet, comfortably.
